Remodel of apartments in Conservation Area.
This project involved remodelling and refurbishment of four apartments for rent in Jesmond Conservation Area.
The initial brief was to review the existing layouts and explore the possibility of providing an additional bedroom. Although it would have been possible to achieve this, it was concluded that this would compromise the quality of the spaces. Instead we proposed to rearrange the accommodation and remove existing stud walls which subdivided the large rooms to provide generous open plan kitchen / dining / living spaces on the south facing aspect. Large bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms are then located to the shady north side.
An unsightly single storey extension together with a redundant rusting metal fire escape were removed from the rear of the building. The roof and all the windows were replaced. Sound proofing and fire compartmentation were improved between all the flats and the building fabric was upgraded to exceed current building standards.
The flats have been fitted out with new contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, and a simple neutral colour palette.
