Whitehouse Farm Centre, Northumberland

Masterplan Redevelopment of Existing Visitor Attraction

The existing Farm provides a valuable community asset comprising a family run farm attraction and children’s adventure play facility, which serves both schools and visitors from the surrounding area.

The proposed masterplan aims to enhance the existing visitor attraction facilities whilst creating an extension of its activities by providing short-stay holiday accommodation.

Enhancements to the existing facilities comprise a new ticket entrance building, landscaped arrival space, enhanced nature trails, and a link building to connect two existing catering facilities into an improved cafe/dining space organised around a central courtyard.

The proposed holiday accommodation has been focussed into two areas across the site, an old mine area and a forest clearing; both identified due to their potential for ecological improvement. A mix of two and three bedroom holiday chalets will be set within biodiverse soft landscaping to provide enhanced habitats for local wildlife and fauna.

To minimise their visual impact within the rural landscape the Chalets are of a low profile and compact design, with their materiality utilising natural timber cladding and green roofs. A highly insulated external envelope and increased air-tightness will ensure thermal efficiency to reduce energy use and running costs.
